Progress Report

It's been a few months since I started focusing on what can be loosely described as hybrid electronic/rock orchestra music, under the pseudonym, 'Laine Chinensy'.

Here's a showcase of my fairly recent work:

1. TEMPERING THE TEMPEST

Kinda inspired by boss music you hear from some modern JRPGs like Xenoblade. A mix of rock riffs backed by an orchestra. Fairly standard arrangement.

I kinda cheated here since this song is really just comprised of an intro, an A section (with the full-on rock riffs), a B section (where the violins come in to lead the melody), and a transition section. But the entire thing is looped twice -- which is somewhat intentional, since i've been practicing making arrangements for something that would loop naturally in the context of a video game.

On a side note -- I was surprised by the number of views the youtube algorithm gave me. That's 600+ views without self-promotion, which is quite a significant view count for me for this video.

2. ALTERED FURY

A friend of mine is working on a cyberpunk themed video game, so I thought i'd help out with the soundtrack. This is one of the tracks I made for the game. I took a few notes from the Katana Zero soundtrack for this one, and how EDM styles would work in the context of a video game.

Genre-wise, I know it doesn't fall under the “electronic hybrid orchestra” style I was supposed to be going for with my new project, but i'm still having a bit of an identity crisis with where I want my music to go. At the end of the day, I just want to make video game music in general -- and this would still fit the bill.

3. PROTEST THE FATES

This one is primarily an orchestral track, with a hint of some electronic motiffs. Not much else to say here other than that I was going for a fairly straightforward action/boss fight kind of theme. Tried focusing on brass melodies which I usually avoid with this one. Good practice, I guess?

I listened to a lot of fire emblem for this one, for brass inspiration!

4. ULTRABIONIC

My attempt at composing a hybrid orchestral track with a cinematic scifi motiff, with electronic and rock elements mixed in. I tried making the cello the lead instrument this time.

I've been recently inspired by the music and soundtrack of Arknights (yes, from the "music" company Hypergryph), which combines a lot of EDM, symphonic and rock elements for a cool modern cinematic sound...also the new Arknights anime is HYPE!

That's it for this post! I'm quite content that i've been at least been more productive than last year in terms of my composing output. I'm still struggling with how to market my music, but I suppose that's not really the priority at this time -- I literally do not promote my music at all, other than posting on youtube/soundcloud.

I always have to remind  myself when I get anxious that my music is really just a personal hobby, and that my goal isn't really to "get popular" -- but I do sometimes wish for more opportunities to interact with fellow composers or just talk to people who have heard my music. I suppose it's not so much attention-seeking, than it is just craving some form of validation that my music is able to reach someone out there!

But enough drama! It's just nice to look back how far my music genre has changed (for those familiar with my old work) from a decade ago. Then again, I may try doing dark ambient music again at some point, if anyone is still interested in that kind of stuff -- but I need to catch up on my creepypastas for inspiration first.
